Jesse Boykins III gets “Amorous”
Jesse Boykins III - Amorous (Official Music Video) from Jesse Boykins III on Vimeo.
London never looked so good. Jesse Boykins III comes at fans from a completely different space with this picture postcard video for “Amorous” from his debut project The Beauty Created. Directed by Dr. Woo, “Amorous” is a long way from Boykins previous campy “Tabloids” and “Pantyhose” singles, Boykins comes off as considerably more mature and mysterious in this love letter to London. The unbridled hair flopping free in the English Channel winds certain doesn’t hurt the seductive tone. Nice work, Mr. Boykins.

Rocafella Records Is Back, And Dame's Got It

It looks like the house that Dame help build is back, and he's running the ship. Dame Dash recently announced that he's going to be putting artists out on Rocafella Records. The first artist that will be dropping on the Roc will be New Orleans' own, Curren$y. Dame spoke with MTV News about the new Roc.
"I think we just having fun, really, [Curren$y] inspired me to dust off the chains. We brought 'em out for kicks, just 'cause we could. Then we was like, 'F--- it, let's put it out through Roc-A-Fella.' It was really more something he wanted to do. Basically, 'cause we havin' such a good time, and the opportunity's there, we was like, 'Why not?' "
"Def Jam or Universal bought the brand. I think the 'beef' [with us and Jay-Z] was that Jay made it clear he didn't want me or Biggs to be a part of it. That's really where it was at. Now that he doesn't work for Def Jam anymore, he doesn't have the right to use the name. So there's no reason for us not to use it. It's there, and it's a brand that's not being used. So I was like, 'I'll take it.' It always meant something to me."
Dame also touched on the original reason for Rocafella's beginnings and being put on to Curren$y's music:
"The funny thing is, people don't know that Roc-A-Fella wasn't meant to sell records," Dame said. "It was meant to show the respect and the honor amongst each other as friends. It was a friendship thing. That's what people liked. It's what made Roc-A-Fella appealing. It's odd, because I f--- with [Curren$y]. I kinda like him. When I met him, I wasn't as familiar with his music. My nephews and Sean O'Connell put me up on him. I liked him as a friend. Then I start seeing he's super nice with the rhymes, then I started seeing his influence. It's similar to the way we felt back in those days. It's working out."
It seems that Curren$y realizes that he's highly thought of as an artist, as he spoke on being a part of the lagacy:
"What that means, what that shows me, is that dude thinks as highly of me as I do him, I know what's behind that. We all know and the fans know what that represented at the height of it. The aesthetic of it."
Do you think that Dame Dash can really hold the Rocafella brand down and bring it back with Curren$y? Share your thoughts!

I somehow missed this despite being Hypnotic Brass Ensemble's biggest fan. No really, I am. Apparently the film maker, Reuben Atlas, hopes to have it completed this summer!
Janelle Monae: The Archandroid Public Service Announcement and Album Trailer
Big up to Soulculture for this. I have to say the more I hear of the music the more excited about Janelle Monae's album I get. The more conceptual talk I hear the more I get worried it might be a bit pretentious. Truly "transformative" albums generally don't need to be plugged as such in advance but hey, that's just my opinion. I'm still 99% convinced it's going to be a mind-blowing classic and can't wait to hear it.

Peace People…
Welcome back for the third installment of WstPhlWorldWideRadio. I think this is one of the better mix of tracks compiled together… mainly for the theme of “LOVE”. I have listened to, conversed about and experience my fare share of positives and negatives in relationship. I’ve always noticed through song, we the listener can always make a comparison or even find the words that we were meaning to say.
So with that being said… sit back, relax and enjoy… SessionThree

The 80/20 Rule In Relationships
The 80/20 Rule is simple. In a healthy relationship, you get about 80 per cent of what you need/want from your partner. They are caring, respectful and share a lot of the same interests as you, but then you meet someone who catches your attention for an unknown reason. It may well be because they fulfill the missing 20 per cent in your relationship – namely the sexual component. Because that 20 per cent has been missing for so long, you quickly conclude, “Hey, this person has everything I am looking for in a partner.” This can be a relationship killer. Since you jump genitals-first for this new interest, you may have given up your 80 per cent loving partner for a 20 per cent fling. The regret automatically sets in.
During the good times in a loving relationship, the other 20 per cent doesn’t really matter because you don’t notice it missing. You are content and fulfilled with your partner. Your 80 per cent feels like 100 per cent. When you are in an argument, however, because your partner is too messy or something petty, then the 20 per cent is tossed into the limelight.
This isn’t to say that you should stick with the current, thankless partner. You might only be getting the 20 per cent in the relationship, anyway. In this case, if you are truly miserable, maybe you should shop around. The point is to look at your relationship and really question if something substantial is missing. If this is the case and you feel unsatisfied, then move on and find someone who can offer you more. Remember, a key element to any relationship is honesty – not just to your partner, but yourself.
The 80/20 Rule explains some of the mysteries of relationships. It makes sense why cheaters go after the 20 per cent while trying to hold on to the other 80 per cent. The relationship crush (when you are in a loving relationship but have a crush on the local barista) often manifests because you see the other 20 per cent in the crush. And even the “players,” who jump from one 20 per cent adventure to another in a vain attempt to eventually equal 100.
If your relationship is going through a rough patch, think about the 80/20 Rule. Before switching partners, be careful since you might be giving up more than you think. First look at what you have instead of focusing on what is missing. Just remember, don’t throw away a good thing for a piece of new ass. We don’t need the divorce rate to inflate anymore.

Gilles Peterson: Erykah Badu Back To Back Special

If you've been listening to BBC Radio One (Gilles Peterson) and 1Xtra (Benji B) lately, you've been hearing some great discussions with some of your favorite artists. From Mos Def, to Jay Electronica, Chris "Daddy" Dave, K'naan, and now, another that we've been waiting for. Following Tuesday's release, Gilles Peterson goes one on one with the incomparable, Erykah Badu. So, to hear the low down on her album New Amerykah Pt. II, an exclusive Jay Electronica track, and much more, head over to the archived show (but don't forget you only have 6 days left). We're tuning in right now over here!

Strong Arm Steady: "Best of Times" f. Phonte (Video)
While the album has received ample promotion from Stones Throw, it's safe to say Strong Arm Steady and Madlib's In Search of Stoney Jackson will find itself marked as one of those sleeper hit records of 2010. That's not to say it hasn't seen a fair amount of positive reviews, either. It's simply the fact that many bigger publications have always slept on this California-based crew.
Lead single "Best of Times" is one of the record's highlights, thanks in part to Phonte's work on the hook and his killer guest verse. Especially noteworthy is Madlib's sunny production, which helps brighten up the downtrodden moments of the three verses. The accompanying video doesn't exactly do much for the song, but it might help to gain more attention for In Search of Stoney Jackson, which is in stores now.
Flying Lotus Scores "Heaven and Earth Magic," Live
On Friday (March 26), Flying Lotus and labelmate Dr. Strangeloop performed a live score for Harry Smith's 1962 avant-garde feature film, Heaven and Earth Magic at the Ann Arbor Film Festival. Thanks to a resourceful blogger, video of the event has surfaced online. Check out clips of the performance here: Part 1, Part 2, Interview.
The animated film, primarily composed out of black-and-white cutouts from 19th-century catalogs, is one macabre and surrealist trip: A trio of stickmen somersault inside a disembodied head, Victorian boxers pummel a figure who appears as half-lady half-watermelon, a skeleton operates an egg-laying contraption. In a brief interview before their performance, Flying Lotus and Dr. Strangeloop explained that they incorporated sound effects from the original film, trying to synesthesize the film's grainy quality. See for yourself.
Dwele – “What’s Not To Love” (New Music)

Brand new Dwele taken from his upcoming album W.W.W. (W.ants W.orld W.omen) which is his first album in over two years. Dwele recently tweeted that he was flying to Hawaii to work with Kanye West, so fingers my fingers are crossed in hope that a collab ends up on the new album.

Aloe Blacc - I Need A Dollar (Teaser) from What Matters Most on Vimeo.
The only reason I watch How To Make It In America is because this song is the intro. Other than that, HBO put out one hell of a terrible series. Anyway, here is a teaser video for the single, as well as the downloadable version. I am not positive if this is just a standalone track or if it will appear on a project, but it is extremely fresh nonetheless. Check it out and let me know what you think!

Words by Phonte; This was recorded back in ‘05-06 at Young Guru’s crib sometime after the release of Minstrel Show. This was intended for Leftback as an iTunes bonus track but we just got word today that 9th doesn’t want us to use it for whatever reason, and that’s fine. In any event, I’m not gonna let anything or anybody stop me from getting music to my fans. Fuck that.

Video: Erykah Badu – “Window Seat”
Last night Erykah’s debuted her latest video for “Window Seat” at precisely 3:33am on her website. Once again she delivers incredible visuals with a message. The inspiration for the video comes from Matt & Kim’s “Lesson’s Learned”. The video is shot in the same streets of the JKF assassination in Texas. Erykah comes out of the same car he did. We find Erykah stripping herself figuratively and literally of layers in order to evolve and liberate herself in a new way. But in life, change is always met with opposition; …quick to assassinate what they do not understand….A single person within a circumstance can move one to change, to love ourself, to EVOLVE. The words in blue paint at the end read ‘Groupthink‘. Time to wake up y’all, let’s not be sheep.
Her new album New Amerykah Part II: Return of the Ankh drops next Tuesday. Please watch the video and let me know what you think.

They say that it’s a long way to the top if you wanna Rock ‘n’ Roll, and that’s an expression singer/songwriter Res knows all too well. 2001 was the year Res changed the game with How I Do, a cross-genre masterpiece that she co-penned with childhood friend Santi White (now known as Santigold). The album yielded four hit singles – the Nas remixed “Ice King”, the Billboard chart-topping “They Say Vision”, “Golden Boys”, and “Sittin’ Back” – and placed Res in a unique albeit coveted position of soulful songstress with a Hip-Hop edge. Like many great artists on the majors, the Philly native fell victim to label politics. “In a nut shell, I put out the first record [How I Do] and MCA went under,” she explains. “Instead of letting all of the people go, they handpicked like a hundred artists and brought them to Geffen. I went to Geffen, made a whole second Res album and they never put it out.” The album was mixed, mastered, and shelved. After a few years of stunted creativity while living in LA on a label salary, Res made the bravest decision in her career – she severed ties with Geffen and became a free agent. “Years were going by and they were just paying my rent and letting me live but not putting my music out,” she recalls. “I asked if I could leave.”
Now, she is releasing her second solo album full ofsongs that were previously unreleased from her Geffen days coupled with newly penned hymns of heartache, love, and rebirth, Black.Girls.Rock! is the long-awaited album that will live up to every fan’s expectation.

R5 Presents- Little Dragon with VV Brown Tue, March 23, 2010 9:00 PM in Philadelphia

Little Dragon- The psychedelic pop sounds of Sweden's Little Dragon are a delectably danceable layer cake of juxtapositions. Far-out synths laid atop driving beats and basslines covered in the sweet iciness of Yuki Nagano's delicate voice. Their sound has gained momentum in Europe, and despite having no record label in the U.S., Little Dragon has culled a devout following in the States due to tours with TV on the Radio and constant radio rotation of cuts from their newest album, Machine Dreams.
VV Brown- VV Brown makes pop music from another planet—a world that resembles ours but is a lot more fun and unpredictable. “I’m a messenger from the future, but I’m getting love and memories from the past,” the 25-year-old British chanteuse explains. “I’m bringing the two together to create a new kind of energy.” Energy, indeed: If Brown displayed any more exuberance, she might just burst into flames. A rocket ride through doo-wop, glam, alt-rock, electronica, ’50s rock, and even video-game noises. After growing up “a tall black girl nerd loner” in Northampton, England, Brown bolted for Los Angeles following high school to pursue a singing career but returned to the U.K. when the pressure to become Beyoncé 2.0 proved too great.

Is there a market for a punk&b princess with a multi-part concept album about an alien robot falling in love with a human? The Atlanta-via-Kansas City fireball got her start as part of OutKast's crew (she sings on "Call the Law" and "In Your Dreams" from Idlewild and has a couple tracks on Big Boi's second Purple Ribbon mixtape), and signed with Diddy's Bad Boy empire earlier this year. So she certainly has some heavy hitters behind her. But can her genre-mashing sci-fi vision find an audience?
Janelle Monáe's previous whirlwind sets suggest that it just might be a possibility. Backed by a drummer, a DJ, and a guitarist in a wig and formal outfit straight out of the "Hey Ya" video, she delivers Broadway musical moves with hardcore intensity, stage-diving and running around in the crowd.
Nothing about Janelle Monáe's sound fits with any current trends. She blends synth-rock with the kind of retro-futurist oompah OutKast have explored in recent years. She was even nominated for a Grammy in 2008 (best urban performance). Shes about to drop a new album in 2010 and will be performing two nights in a row in a tiny, intimate club setting to debut her new material as well as play a few hits off the old abum
